BHP AND AUSTRALIA-JAPAN RELATIONS

Today, BHP supplies iron ore, coal, copper, nickel and uranium to our Japanese customers.

BHP has longstanding joint ventures and partnerships with Japan’s major corporations:

– Mitsubishi and Mitsui for major coal assets in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.
– Itochu and Mitsui for iron ore assets in Western Australia.
– Mitsubishi in copper, through Escondida and Antamina in South America.
– NYK to progress shipping decarbonization across our shared supply chain.
– A desalination plant at our copper operations in Chile is owned and operated 50% by Mitsui.

BHP also works with many Japanese companies to supply our operations – such as Komatsu for mining machinery and Bridgestone for tyres. Japanese steel companies, Nippon Steel and JFE, purchase our iron ore and then provide us with steel for our rail operations in the Pilbara.
