She specialises in mathematical logic and her research interests cover Artificial Intelligence, cognitive science, computer-supported collaborative learning and other fields. Professor Arai is known internationally for her work on projects including the “researchmap” and “NetCommons” as well as for directing the “Todai Robot Project”, which has been widely covered by international media. Her TED talk “Can a robot pass a university entrance exam?” attracted over 1.8 million viewers worldwide. Since 2016 she has been leading research and development on the “Reading Skills Test” which examines reading comprehension ability.

Nobuko later joined EY-Parthenon, EY’s strategic consulting arm, and now serves as the EY Asia-Pacific Strategy Execution Leader. She is also a regular writer and contributor for international and Japanese media outlets such as Nikkei, the BBC and Bloomberg. She helps lead the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific in Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She began her career at the Australian Treasury and has held a number of roles across the Australian Government, including in the Department of Climate Change designing Australia’s carbon price and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet working on Commonwealth-State relations. After re-joining NAB in 2013, Nathan was Executive General Manager for Corporate Affairs and then Executive General Manager Group Strategy & Development, with responsibility for the global execution of the bank’s corporate strategy and mergers and acquisitions activity.
